The Mission-Aransas Reserve will be hosting a FREE Teachers On The Estuary (TOTE) Workshop this summer for middle and high school teachers in the Coastal Bend Region: “Marine Plastic Pollution: current research and community environmental movements” on July 26-28, 2021 at the The University of Texas Marine Science institute in Port Aransas, Texas.
This engaging workshop is designed to help middle and high school teachers and educators bring estuarine and environmental STEM concepts and practices into their classroom, laboratory and field programs. TOTE workshops are a minimum of 15 contact hours (2-3 day workshop), giving teachers the opportunity to explore coastal habitats and conduct field investigations, interact with local scientists and experienced coastal educators, integrate local and national monitoring data into classroom-based lessons, and engage in hands-on activities.
This years’ workshop theme of marine plastic pollution will discuss human-estuary connections, resilient ecosystem and provide regional research teachers can take back to their classroom. Come explore current research being done by local scientists, examine scientific processes to conduct beach surveys, and take part in the conversation about marine debris.

- A free two-and-a-half day workshop on July 26-28th
- July 26 & 27 (8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) and July 28 (8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)
- Hands-on instruction featuring locally-relevant research and interaction with the scientists who conduct it
- A $100 personal stipend
- Supplies for classroom, field, or laboratory activities
- Access to free and downloadable digital lesson plans, data sets and estuarine resources
All TOTE and Estuaries 101 Curriculum are aligned to national and state standards for science learning. These workshops and its associated resources are provided in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Estuarine Research Reserve System.
