The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) relies on the support of dedicated interns to help advance our marine research, conservation, and education efforts. Whether you’re interested in assisting with research, supporting education programs, or contributing to outreach initiatives, we have a place for you! Interns play a crucial role in furthering our mission, gaining hands-on experience, and deepening their understanding of marine science.

Please note that all internships at UTMSI are unpaid, housing is not provided, and interns are not covered by UTMSI’s insurance.

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP Are you passionate about marine science and education? Do you enjoy working with students and the public in an engaging, hands-on environment? The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is seeking enthusiastic Education interns to support our educational programs. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals looking to gain experience in informal education, marine science outreach, and aquarium care while making a meaningful impact.

INTERNSHIP ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Interns will have the opportunity to assist in a variety of educational activities, including engaging with visitors as docents by providing educational information about marine science exhibits, answering questions, and guiding guests through the institute’s displays. They will also support staff in maintaining aquarium exhibits, including feeding and ensuring the tanks remain clean and suitable for marine life. Interns may help facilitate the UT Summer Science Program by assisting with hands-on science activities and experiments for K-12 students, fostering curiosity and scientific exploration. Additionally, interns will assist in leading interactive educational field trips, teaching school groups about coastal ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and conservation efforts.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are 18 years or older.
  • Have a passion for marine science, education, or environmental outreach.
  • Are comfortable interacting with diverse audiences, including children and families.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic setting.
  • Are eager to learn and share knowledge about marine life and conservation.
  • Have a flexible schedule and can commit to assisting with programs as needed.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.

HOW TO APPLY Candidates interested in the education internship should complete and submit the Education Internship Interest Form. A resume is required, and a cover letter is optional but recommended. While interns are primarily needed for the summer, we accept applications year-round and may offer opportunities at other times depending on availability and program needs.

WILDLIFE REHABILITATION BABY BIRD INTERNSHIP The Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) is offering an exciting internship opportunity for undergraduate students or recent graduates interested in wildlife rehabilitation, specifically focusing on the care and husbandry of orphaned and injured baby birds. This hands-on experience will provide valuable skills in avian care, husbandry, and rehabilitation while supporting ARK’s mission of wildlife conservation. The internship runs from April 1 – September 15, 2025, with flexible start and end dates. Interns must commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week (equivalent to 1.5 workdays) with a set weekly schedule, though some flexibility may be allowed based on intern and ARK needs.

INTERNSHIP ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns will gain experience in wildlife rehabilitation by assisting with:

  • Preparing diets and feeding orphaned and injured birds.
  • Maintaining records related to animal care.
  • Cleaning and maintaining enclosures.
  • Supporting intake and release efforts, including physical examinations and basic diagnostics.
  • Engaging with the public through education and telephone triage.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are 18 years or older.
  • Are undergraduate students or recent graduates seeking fieldwork experience.
  • Have strong communication skills and are comfortable interacting with diverse audiences.
  • Can work independently and collaborate within a small team.
  • Can handle challenging conditions (e.g., long hours, inclement weather).
  • Are able to lift up to 40 lbs.
