Beat the heat and come relax in the air conditioning with this FREE summer program, for visitors aged six and older. We will show short marine science related films and follow up with an engaging hands-on activity.

June 15

 “All the Cups; Protect the Gulf.” The footage captured in both films reminds us of where our trash and other pollutants end up - in the ocean. Six year old Jack Tunnell narrates two short films that focus on protecting our coastal environments. (~8 minutes) Film credit, Jace Tunnell.

June 22

 “Sampling Seagrass.” A closer look at various types of estuary grasses, the animals that are sheltered in them, and the methods scientists use to study these grasses. (~10 minutes) Estuaries.noaa.gov.

"So what is an Estuary?” The Association of National Estuary Programs provides a fun explanation of what estuaries are and why they are important (~8 minutes) Estuaries.noaa.gov.

July 13 “NERRS System Wide Monitoring Program.” Learn about the System Wide Monitoring Program and see how high-tech underwater equipment helps keep track of conditions in the estuary 24/7/365. (~10 minutes) Estuaries.noaa.gov.
July 20  “Oil in the Ocean.” When oil spills occur, they can shut down beaches and fishing grounds. They can also lead to public evacuations. Environmental disasters can be prevented if cleanup efforts begin immediately. July 27 “Cara the Sea Turtle.” Join Cara as she leaves her family's nest for a trip across the Atlantic! Cara must outwit a hungry shark, find just the right food, and discover the perfect place to nap. Then one day, Cara’s instincts tell her she must return home. August 3 “Phytoplankton” Young students learn about plankton (in particular phytoplankton) and why it is vital to life on this planet. (~10 minutes) Estuaries.noaa.gov.
