The Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory (FAML) at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute located in Port Aransas, Texas, was established in 1979.
Currently, two faculty members – Lee Fuiman, and Andrew Esbaugh – are located at the Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory and three additional faculty members – Peter Thomas , Kristin Nielsen, Simon Brandl and Jordan Casey– are part of the larger group of fish biologists at the Marine Science Institute. The FAML staff usually includes several research and postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and technicians. Undergraduate student interns work at the lab during the spring and summer. Additional research associates, postdocs, and graduate students are associated with the other fish-based researchers at the Institute.
Our work at FAML focuses on basic research on captive spawning, larval development and rearing, and nutrition of broodstock and larvae of recreationally and commercially important fishes. We also support an active program on the interactions between fish physiology and the environment. We work with a variety of species in culture, including: red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma), and pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera).
