Hurricane Update
Saturday, August 26, 2017, 08:00am - 05:00pm

At this time  (Saturday 10 a.m.)we have not received communication from PA emergency management officials on-site (Dorm D) about the condition of PA and UTMSI. As of 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning the National Weather Service indicates that a Hurricane Warning is still in effect for this morning and may be downgraded to Tropical Storm warnings as the storm loses strength. Heavy rainfall will likely continue north of a line from Rockport to Goliad today and tonight with 20 to 30 inches of rain possible with isolated 40 inch totals. Port Aransas winds are currently 47 mph out of the SW; forecast to be 40 mph SSW by 4:00 p.m. Sunday and falling from that time forward.

Although Harvey will weaken, it is expected to meander over South Texas for the next few days, with areas of heavy rainfall, flash flooding and strong winds. Harvey is forecast to begin moving away from South Texas early next week, with diminishing rainfall projected through the rest of this week.

Please continue to monitor the situation through media outlets and do not attempt to return to Port Aransas at this time.

Based on the projected rainfall, potential flooding  and wind damage, the Institute will remain closed Monday, August 28th. Essential personnel will be notified when it is safe to return.

We are continuing to monitor the situation and will let you know as we learn more. Remain sheltered until further notice.

Stay safe and be cautious.
