Calling all Estuary Explorers, ages 4-8. Come explore our estuary on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. this Spring. These programs are free of charge. We have great programs planned:
March 22- Wetlands exploring- Kids will create a nature journal using recycled materials. Once complete we will tour the wetlands area to practice making observations in our journal. Participants are encouraged to bring their journals back for each of the following weeks to continue writing/recording.
March 29- Hermit crabs- Kids will learn about hermit crabs by viewing them in their natural habitat out at the WEC and then inside the pier lab observing their body parts, movement, and the ways it protects them. In closing, they will create a hermit crab craft to take home.
April 5- Bird beaks- Kids will explore the different types of bird beaks discussing the uses and functions of each through a hands-on activity. Following the activity, they will take a brief tour of the ARK.
April 12- Lightning Whelk- Kids will explore and use some basic scientific equipment to help make observations. They will be observing the Texas State shell, the Lightning Whelk.
April 19- Earth Day- In honor of Earth Day later in the week we will be making eggshell planters that can be taken home and replanted on Earth Day.
April 26- Turtles-Kids will learn about the life cycle of a turtle as well as how to keep our beaches safe for the turtles' journey (as nesting season approaches). They will conclude with a tour of the turtle area at the ARK.
