Researchers at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute were recently awarded a project by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to understand why native Texas freshwater mussels are endangered. Their work will combine looking at growth increment “rings” and stable isotope analysis to identify relationships between environmental stress and growth performance in two threatened mussels. The results from the project will be used as a platform for more expanded work on freshwater, estuarine and marine bivalves.
