Copepod Wins a Beauty Contest

b2ap3_thumbnail_Brad_PhotoContest.jpgUTMSI’s very own, Dr. Brad Gemmell, won first place in the UT College of Natural Sciences “Visualizing Science Competition.”

The winners of the 2014 Visualizing Science competition were announced last night at the College of Natural Sciences’ Town Hall. This first place image is of a marine copepod using a new method of polarized light microscopy which allows the identification of tissue properties in live specimens without the need for pseudocoloring or digital computation. In this image, brightness corresponds to material transparency and color corresponds to orientation of the tissue.

If you’d like to see the other winning images, as well as the People’s Choice image, which was chosen by our friends on Facebook, you can see them at the following link: https://cns.utexas.edu/news/visualizing-science-2014.

Congratulations Brad!
